I have a motto of "to experience life is to be open minded". I love trying new things. If I don't give something a chance then I feel like I'm missing out on something huge.
This way of mind also stretches to my tastes of music, movies and books. I have a real hard time when someone asks me what's my favourite type of music or movie. Usually on my iPhone I've got a playlist that includes genres from soft rock to heavy metal, even J-Pop (that's Japanese Pop). As for movie's, I tend to like genres which suits my mood and is anything from Disney to Action to Arthouse and Horror.
I'm now starting to see this ecclectic taste in my writing. All the ideas that are swimming around in my head are all of different ya genres, although when I try to create a contemporary story it turns into a horror (don't ask me how). Now I just have to figure which story idea I'm going to delve into first.
So, do you have certain tastes when it comes to music and movies, or do you like to be open minded and give any genre a try? If so, do you see yourself writing in multiple genres or sticking to the one?

I do have certain tastes - for instance I am not one for horror - but I like to think of myself as an eclectic reader and the music I listen to is definitely just a compilation or random things I like dancing hyperactively to. I also like to write in different genres and also different mediums. So I'm always itching to work on a different idea or format and getting distracted from the project at hand. I can see myself always wanting to write in different genres and formats as I want to be able to embrace all my interests and opportunities.
I can relate. I gravitate towards alternative, but I've got nearly every other type of music on my iTouch. Well, maybe not country. And as a reader, I read all different genres. But writing is mostly MG and YA fantasy. Maybe I should branch out. Maybe not.
I'm not a particularly eclectic person. At this point I don't write in a huge number of genres, but to spice things up and 'broaden my horizons' I do tend to throw other genres in my predominant YA fantasy genre. For example, I might do a steampunk-fantasy, or a fantasy-romance. Or, if I'm feeling exceptionally advernturous, I'll throw fantasy, paranormal, crime and romance into one mixing pot. But I always stick to YA. I can't seem to stay away from it :P
I'm just like you. I love a huge mix of things. Especially in music. You can catch me listening to heavy metal one day and Pavarotti the next :o) Good luck trying to find the genre that suits you!
I'm all over the place, too, when it comes to reading, movies, and music. I used to think I would only write YA fantasy/urban fantasy, but then i started writing YA contemporary. Then I was positive I would only write YA, but now I'm working on a romantic suspense. I'm never going to say never again. ;)
I will read, watch, listen to just about anything, as long as it is entertaining. I guess I have preferences, but that doesn't keep me from enjoying all genres. As far as writing... so far I've stuck to contemporary YA.
I like to try new things! Music is such an open thing that i can't imagine not trying out anything... doesn't mean I like everything, though!
My tastes in music, movies, and books are pretty eclectic too. My tastes change according to my moods, though I do have my favorites. Same with my writing. I prefer writing realistic YA, but I've also written a YA paranormal, I'm writing an adult women's fiction, and I have an idea for a YA dystopian. I don't think I have to stick with one particular genre as long as I continue having fun with writing.
I'm all over the place, but I have found that YA is easiest for me. And my voice definitely lends itself to a certain type of story over others, but my current project is sci-fi, and I have a sparkly new idea for...well, I'm not really sure what genre it fits under yet, but sure as heck not sci-fi. :)
Total eclectic. WIPs are epic fantasy, war surrealism, and literary crime...
I love giving any genre a try because you never know when you will fall in love with something outside of your comfort zone. Writing in different genres and age ranges also appeals to me. We are kindreds, you and I! :)
