I have this one character who is screaming to come out, even though I'm in the middle of writing another story. The one thing is that her story is actually a paranormal romance. There are just so many YA paranormal romances out now so the problem "is paranormal romance overdone?"
I have to admit that some that I've read follow an exact formula, but there are some that are very different. The one thing that they all do have is the love triangle. I don't think I've read one without two guys vying for the girl's attention.
I have to admit that I still love the paranormal romance, as long as the girl's a kick-but, take-no-crap-from-anyone type. So, this is when I ask you:
Is paranormal romance overdone? Or is there still some room for stories that add their own twist on the genre?

Nope, not overdone! I think the problem with a lot of it though is that the tough, kick ass heroine is only kick ass because the author tells us so. There aren't that many who genuinely will do things that other people - readers included - won't like. But the romance? Nah, that's still good. :)
There are a lot, but you just mentioned a way to make yours different - no love triangle!
Huh...I haven't read that many love triangles, except in YA PR, where they are abundant. If you read the PR forums on Goodreads and Amazon, you'll see that PR is not overdone. Readers want more! But they do want different, too. Besides, writing for the market is dangerous. Write what YOU love, what no one but you can write. If you love it, others will, too.
I think it's almost like saying, "Is science fiction overdone?"
YA PR is almost a genre unto itself. There are customers who read solely YA PR, and some who branch out into contemp YA or adult PR.
Just tell the story well. That's all you can do.
I don't think anything's ever overdone as long as you put your unique twist on it...you maybe have trouble with agents, but I think unique always wins out.
