F is for Firsts

One reason to read and write YA is to relive and create firsts. These firsts can be happy or sad. Just to be able to go back to that one moment in time and be able to relive that first, or experience something new or out of the ordinary that you haven't experienced before. This is the main aims of YA, to be able to go back to a time of "reasonable" innocence and relive those moments.

It's funny, I'm nowhere near my teens anymore, but I can still remember some of my firsts.
  1. First kiss: Behind a brick wall and in front of half the school... yeah, for some reason two people kissing was a big spectator sport at 15.
  2. First loss: My cousin died when I was 10. He was the same age as me. He died on a soccer field after being kicked in the head.
  3. First time feeling real fear: Not till I was 18. I was involved in a car accident and found out what a pinball feels like. I surprisingly walked away from that (yeah, the cops and ambulance was surprised at that as well).
  4. First regret: 17, when I was at my friends 18th. Yeah, being brought home by the cops wasn't exactly how I wanted to end the night either... hey, I only regret going out, I was actually the only sober one and spent the night baby sitting a passed out friend.
  5. First novel complete: Yeah, I don't really want to go there. It was written by an 18 year old who was writing for a very strict audience... baby sister (which I pleased). Let's just say that she was written into the story and turned out to be a missing princess who was sent to earth to save her... yeah, she liked it but it's not seeing the light of day.
There are some moments in life that have been engraved into my mind, but I think all these events, whether happy or sad or even embarrassing, have made me who I am today. Maybe I would want to go back and redo some of the "firsts" that I've had, but where would all the fun be with that?

What are some of the firsts you remember? If you could, would you want to go back and change some of these?

I remember some of my firsts, but they didn't happen when I was a teen. I was really boring as a teen. Nothing happened.

One big first was sneaking alcohol with friends when I was 17. We weren't too smart about it, either, and I'm surprised none of us got caught. We somehow got brooze during lunch (when we were supposed to be a school) and dumped a large amount in our slurpees. We then went back to school. Apparently, I smelled of rum for my first class of the afternoon. Everyone else noticed but my teacher (who I made sure to keep away from).

Aww...how awful about your cousin. So sad...

Yeah, if I could go back and have a "do over", I definitely would.

I can think of a few firsts I'd like to change, but I'll keep those to myself! :)

Best "F" word of the day so far! :-)

I can think of some firsts and lasts - such as trying to cycle with my eyes closed down a slope towards a stream. Ended up 'in' the stream. I was seven, but not a very clever seven!

New follower. Yay! Thanks for checking out the Cheetah. :)

My first kiss was so quick, so not-at-all awesome that it's tough to remember. There are other first kisses that I do remember, though. Ahhh. Truly the stuff of YA.

Thanks for sharing!

Good idea for today's posts. I don't remember many of the firsts when I was younger but I didn't get my real first kiss (on the lips) until I was 22. But I do remember the first time I was kissed on the cheek. He was my friend, it was early elementary so 2nd or 3rd grade right after school. He kissed me then ran away cause his mom was there waiting. I might do a post on memories soon.

Hi Cheree, you have some interesting firsts. I like your choice of topic for "F." It's a great scrapbooking topic as well. My firsts were so long ago, they've mellowed with age, and so I don't have strong feelings about wishing they'd been different or whatever. Life is what it is.

You made a great choice for F! It was interesting reading about your firsts (and I'm sorry about your cousin, that's so sad).

If I had it to do over, my first kiss would have been a bit more special instead of during a game of strip poker. Ah, if I could tell my young self not to try so hard to be cool...

First kiss...definately a great memory from my teens. I'm stopping by from the "A to Z" challenge and I look forward to reading more from you.

I read a book once about a girl who wished she could return to her teen years and re-live her life over again. When it happened though, she realised that being a teenager wasn't quite as she remembered it!

I don't think there is much I would change about my "firsts" though. I'm pretty happy with how everything went!

Ah... those firsts. I always wish I could change some of them, but then I realize I wouldn't be the same person if I hadn't done things the way I did. Sometimes screwing things up in a spectacular way is the only way to grow and change.

So while I do regret things I did as a teen (and even things I did last week), I wouldn't change my 'first' anything. If I did, I might not be me.

And I'm with you. My first novel isn't ever seeing the light of day.

I don't write YA so I never thought of it in terms of reliving those precious (or yucky) firsts. But you're definitely right. When I was a teen, I was looking for books that I could relate to - books on young love, first kisses, first losses etc. Very interesting post!
