Pretending is something I'm good at. Every day I pretend that I know what I'm talking about. It's not really hard actually. If you speak confidently about something, people will start believing you.
Today I pretended I wanted to buy an iPod dock just to get a free charge... hey it worked, walk around the electronics store testing the different models it took my iPhone from a red to green status.
As a writer, it's my job to pretend. I need to pretend in order to create the characters, create their situations and make their world. It's all about pretending in order to make the reader believe that the story (no matter how fantastical it is) is believable.
How can one be good at pretending?
- Speak with passion
- Walk with confidence
- Dare people to question
So, what have you pretended lately?

Great post Cheree! So true. If your not confident in your writing why would the reader be.
Kudos on the a-z challange. I wasn't daring enough to tackle it this year.
I've always been a 'pretender'. When I was a kid I used to pretend to be all sorts of things. Once I got to old to act out my fantasies, I just day dreamed until I decided to put my day dreams to paper and voila! A writer is born;)
Sneaking a charge!! Clever girl.
Pretending is requisite to writing! ;-)
Hi Cheree! I'm new to your blog, but I'm liking it here.
My kindergarten teacher told my mom I was the "Great Pretender". I was very quiet in class, but I got top marks. They were very surprised. lol
Pretending is akin to imagining. And we writers are especially good at harnessing the power of our imaginations. Though sometimes, I wonder if my characters are real. They're real enough to me...in my head. =)
Sometimes writers definitely have to pretend to get through those slumps and know what we're doing. Also you do have to pretend to be those characters so you can slip into their skins. Great post!
Oooh I LOVE that: dare people to question the world you create. That's fantastic!!
Hi Cheree, well I've pretended that I don't mind that this rain NEVER STOPS and I don't mind sitting at a coffee shop drinking coffee rather than walking on the beach coz no one will let me write all day coz I'm on hols so I have to sneak to my computer while they're all asleep. So here I am, ha ha.
Good post. Hope the weather Gold Coast way is better than on the Sunny Coast where I'm spending Easter hols.
If you want to catch some of my A-Z on my L'Aussie Travel site, I've slipped a few Aussie trips in (Outback for O and guess what's coming for Q?? Hmm, rocket science.)

That's freaking hilarious that you did that! Naught, naughty! I would get caught in a second. :P
Fake it 'til you make it! ;)-
Pretending is fun if it's for writing. Pretending to be outgoing when I'm not can be challenging sometimes.
I pretend at work all the time. We're supposed to sound happy when answering the phone and be all cheerful at work. I can sound it at least.
I've always pretended and played with the help of my imagination. I love it. That's part of the fun in being a writer, I never have to "grow up" out of it.
I'm always pretending. I think it's a prerequisite for working in hospo. You have to pretend the customers aren't driving you batty....
Great post. I pretend all the time at work - I smile and make out I love my job. Nothing could be further from the thruth!
